NDTV Correspondent, Thursday, February 16, 2006 (Patna):
A woman in Bihar says neighbours stripped her clothes as a punishment after a marriage she tried to broker fell apart.
Sahiban Khatun, 35, a panchayat ward member in Saraiya Chainpatti village claims men of upper caste Bhumihar community were involved in the incident.
"They forcibly took me to their house, smeared black paint on my face and paraded me naked," Khatun said.
After local media carried extensive reports on the incident in the eastern Champaran district, police are investigating, but no arrests have been made so far.
Speaking about the marriage Khatun tried to arrange, villagers said, "she arranged for the boy’s family to see the girl, when the boy’s family rejected the girl, everyone felt it was Sahiban’s fault".
It is shocking as the insult ordered against Khatun was sanctioned by the panchayat.
