BHUBANESWAR, Feb. 17. — A clerk posted at the office of deputy director mines, at Joda in Keonjhar district, is said to have amassed assets to the tune of Rs 57 lakh while two sub-inspectors of police at Kaniha and Rajkanika allegedly had disproportionate assets to the tune of Rs 38.54 lakh and 21.45 lakh, respectively, and a sub-collector had mopped up wealth worth over Rs 51 lakh. These were the valuations revealed by the state vigilance department in some of the disproportionate assets cases registered during December 2005 alone.

Official sources at the vigilance department said the clerk, Mr Nikunja Ranjan Kar, was a check-gate employee in the mineral-rich area and had amassed wealth much beyond his known sources of income. The assets in his possession have been estimated at Rs 56,95,411.
Mr Debaraj Senapati, OAS (I), ex-sub collector, Khurda has been charged for alleged disproportionate assets to the tune of Rs 51,03,779 beyond his known sources of income by the Vigilance department in another case.

Corruption in the uniformed force was also detected with a sub inspector of police at the NTPC Kaniha police station Mr Sitakanta Das accumulating wealth of over Rs 38 lakh beyond his known source of income as per the vigilance case registered against him while Mr Adhar
Chandra Mallik, another sub-inspector of police at Rajkanika police station was found to have assets worth Rs 21,45,800 beyond his known sources of income.

Besides these cases, the Vigilance, during December 2005 has registered cases against Rashmi Ranjan Das, junior engineer (Civil), office of the executive engineer, R&B division, Puri for alleged possession of disproportionate assets to the tune of Rs.24,94,591, Mr Bhagaban Rout, branch manager, legal cell, of the State Handloom Weavers co-operative Society Ltd., Bhubaneswar for alleged possession of disproportionate assets to the tune of Rs.18,24,451.

The other DA cases registered included one against Mr Prasanna Kumar Sahoo, JE, Kantilo irrigation section, Nayagarh, Mr Motilal Patel, junior engineer, Hemagiri block, Sundergarh and Mr Somanath Panda, Ex-executive engineer, Bhawanipatna said official sources.
