Godhra train carnage accused sent to police remand

Ahmedabad, Feb 17 : A designated court has sent Godhra train carnage accused Mehboob Hasan to seven days remand for his alleged role in the Sabarmati train carnage four years ago. Special POTA court judge Sonia Gokani today remanded Hasan to police custody. The police had stated before the court that Hasan was one of the key members of the core-group which had planned and executed the train carnage in Godhra on February 27, 2002 and sought a 10-day remand period Police had yesterday arrested Hasan (32), a tea vendor from Vachla Odha locality. Police said Hasan was a tea vendor who was in the vicinity when the train carnage took place and his exact role, in the mob attack that set ablaze the S-6 coach, would be probed. Hasan was absconding since the day of the incident. The Special Investigation Team (SIT) of the Gujarat police, set up to probe this case, has so far arrested more than 100 accused, including some members of the `core group’ (that helped in executing the train carnage) and a Godhra based cleric who is alleged to be the main conspirator
