Thiruvananthapuram, Feb. 18 (PTI): The Kerala Government has formed a Dam Safety Authority for providing advice on protection, monitoring and repair of dams in the state.
Justice G Sasidharan had been appointed chairman of the Authority, state Water Resources Minister Thiruvanchoor Radhakrishnan, said in a press release here on Saturday.
It was for the first time in the country that a state was forming an exclusive authority for ensuring safety of dams, the Minister said.
The Authority would recommend to the government to increase or decrease water levels to ensure the people’s safety. It would also check the safety of dams from time to time.
Members of the Authority included Water Resources Principal Secretary,Chief Engineers of Designs Department, Irrigation and Administration, Inter-state Rivers Department, other river organisations, KSEB Civil Department, and State Pollution Control Board Chairman and Principal Chief Conservator of Forests, the release said.
