Sailors released but yet to reach home

Sriram Sampath and Vinod Kumar Menon,   February 18, 2006

Eleven days after their near and dear ones were detained in Fujairah, UAE, following the mysterious death of Sudheer Jagannathan Nonia (31), a sailor from Nerul, Navi Mumbai, the families of the sailors are still baffled. Mid Day traced one of the relatives of a detainee, Pramod Chavan (27), in Mumbai.

Jungbahadur Chavan (57) is desperate to know the whereabouts of his nephew, Pramod, who worked as a fitter and is now in the custody of the Fujairah police.

Chavan was amongst the 25 crewmembers on board Champion Pioneer, the cargo ship, which had sailed to Fujairah from Mangalore port on January 28.

On Thursday morning, Jungbahadur was told by the shipping agency that the crew, except the captain, had been released.

When contacted, a spokesperson from Genoa Maritime, which owns the vessel, denied any such development and maintained, “The case is too sensitive and the release of the detainees will take a few weeks.”

An Indian High Commission official said, “We have managed to get the No Objection Certificate from the police to send the body and the same would be done by this weekend.”
