Troops of the 33 Assam Rifles killed a cadre of the underground United National Liberation Front, UNLF, near Kakching Khunou in an encounter late last night, official sources said.
The slain UG is identified as one Elangbam Boinao, 32 of Hiyanglam Hiranmei. An AK-47 rifle with seven live rounds was recovered from the site of the encounter.
An official statement issued by the Assam Rifles said that based on specific information, troops of the unit laid ambushes at around 10:30 pm last night in the Kakching Lamkhai area. At around 11:00 pm, two persons were observed approaching the ambush site. On being challenged, the individual opened fire and tried to escape towards Kakching Khunou.
One UG was killed on the spot while the other managed to escape taking advantage of the built-up area, the statement said. During a subsequent search of the encounter site, an AK-47 rifle with magazine and seven live rounds of AK-47 ammunition were recovered
Describing the incident, sources said the two UGs had come on a motorcycle, and upon being challenged, the pillion rider opened fire.
In the exchange of fire that ensued, the pillion rider was killed while the driver escapedo on the motorcycle.
Subsequently, search operation were conducted at Umathel Kakching Khunou areas with the aid of Thoubal police commandos, the sources said.
The body of the slai UNLF cadre was handed over to Waikhong police station and was this evening brought to RIMS morgue. The body bore several bullet marks on the torso.
