Plan panel to meet on SC/ST progress

NEW DELHI, Feb. 18. — The Planning Commission is going to organise a national-level meeting of the secretaries in charge of SCs & STs, to get the desired result from schemes introduced for the upliftment of these minority communities.
The meeting is scheduled to take place on 21 February and this effort comes at a time when the Centre is focussed on uplifting the minorities. It is the first meeting of its kind that has been organised by the Commission and a report on the findings will be presented to the Prime Minister, Dr Manmohan Singh.
The meeting will be inaugurated by Planning Commission member, Mr Bhalchandra Mungekar. The deputy chief of the Commission, Mr Montek Singh Ahluwalia, will also address the gathering.
The meeting will deliberate on the following issues on overall status of SCs & STs and the gap between them and the rest of the population with respect to different socio-economic indicators.
These include illiteracy, unemployment, level of poverty, ownership of land and other assets, infant mortality rates and access to drinking water and housing.
Various innovative policies and programmes evolved and implemented by the states for the SCs & STs in conformity with the varying local conditions will also be discussed.
Implementation of the Special Component Plan and Tribal Sub Plan; their impact, difficulties and approach to these in the future, as well as the vision of development of the SCs & STs during the next decade with primary focus on the 11th Five Year Plan will be deliberated upon.
The meeting will be attended by secretaries in charge of SC & ST development both at the state and central levels and also by the concerned national commissions and corporations related to the development of this section.
