Thiruvananthapuram: Kerala Chief Minister Oommen Chandy on Monday told the state assembly that 234 farmers committed suicide in the state in the last five years after the United Democratic Front (UDF) government came into power. In a written reply, he said the maximum number of such cases were reported from Wayanad with 165, followed by Palakkad 26 and Kasaragod 16. However, not a single case was reported from Malappuram and Kottayam districts.
The maximum 96 suicide cases were reported in 2004 and the minimum of 21 cases in 2005, he added.
According to a National Sample Survey report, the average debt of each agriculture family in the state was Rs 33,907/-. The Government had taken various welfare measures for the dependants of the farmers, who committed suicide due to their debts, he added.
