He had again contested from the same constituency in the 2004 Lok Sabha elections under the banner of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and lost to PMK’s R Senthil. Elangovan had convened a meeting with his followers here on February 18 and discussed his plans to form a “caste forum” in Dharmapuri district.
He had earlier sowed the seeds of ‘Vanniyar Sangam’ during his days with PMK founder S Ramadoss. Elangovan had plans to launch the forum using the same modus operandi, which he had exercised in the ‘Vanniyar Sangam’ along with his brother P D Arulmozhi. Elangovan had finalised the date also.
According to BJP leaders, Elangovan was no longer a member of the party and had secured a seat to contest from Dharmapuri Lok Sabha constituency in 2004 using his influence. The motto of Elangovan’s forum, sources said, was to oppose the sitting MLA of Pennagaram Assembly constituency and the PMK State president G K Mani, if he contested again from the same constituency for a third time. Union Health Minister Anbumani Ramadoss had earlier said that Mani would contest from the Pennagaram constituency.
