PM deputes Ahmed for strengthening bilateral ties with Iran

NEW DELHI: Prime Minister Dr Manmohan Singh deputed Minister of State for External Affairs E Ahmed to Tehran to reiterate India’s firm commitment to further consolidate its ties with Iran, notwithstanding the former’s vote against the latter at the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) meeting in Vienna early this month. During his four-day visit to Iran beginning today, Ahmed will also represent India at the Ministerial Conference of Indian Ocean Rim countries to discuss measures to promote economic and commercial ties among the member countries.

The visit assumes significance as it takes place barely 15 days after India supported the US’ European Union (EU) resolution to refer Iran’s nuclear programme to the Security Council. Ahmed is likely to meet President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad and other Iranian leaders and discuss with them bilateral, regional and international issues. The visit of the Minister is to convey the Iranian leadership that India considers Iran a close friend.
