NEW DELHI, Feb. 19. — Calling the CBI probe into the ‘war room leak’ as deceptive and diversionary, former defence minister, Mr George Fernandes, today alleged that the entire exercise was to block the unraveling of truth in the Rs 16,000 crore Scorpene submarine deal. In a statement today, Mr Fernandes said the CBI probe was just to divert public attention.
Mr Fernandes said the CBI investigation was aimed only at catching the “tail” while letting the “head” of the scandal go “unseen and un-probed”. He also asked the defence minister, Mr Pranab Mukherjee, to assure Parliament that no “middlemen” were involved in the deal and the so-called integrity pact between the French armament company Thales and the government was adhered to in letter and spirit.
Mr Fernandes questioned the “high-level Congress links” of the accused and sought an explanation on why those receiving information had not been questioned or arrested.
