Eight CPM workers sentenced to life in muder case

THALASSERY: A Sessions Court here today convicted and sentenced eight CPI (M) activists to life imprisonment for killing an innocent person on mistaken identity three years ago. Delivering the verdict, Principal Sessions Judge S Sathinathan also imposed a fine of Rs two lakh each on the accused, failing which they have to undergo another six year’s rigorous imprisonment.

The Judge found the accused – K Guru Nanak, K M Sooraj, E Iqbal,K Prasanth, K M Vigil, C M Manasan, K Shaji and M Shaiju – guilty of killing T K Ratheesh in Kannur district on December 14, 2001.

The prosecution case was that the accused, armed with lethal weapons stabbed Ratheesh to death after falsely identifying him as an activist of a rival party.

The judge said of the total fine amount Rs 15 Lakh should be paid to the next of kin of the victim and Rs one lakh to a witness K M Sujil, who sustained injuries while trying to rescue the victim.
