Mladic reportedly in custody

There is confusion over reports that top Bosnian Serb war crimes fugitive, General Ratko Mladic been arrested. Serbia’s official news agency said he was detained in Belgrade and was en route to the UN war crimes tribunal in The Hague. But the Serbian government has denied the claims, describing them as "a manipulation which damages its efforts to cooperate with the Hague." Other reports have said Mladic has been located and his surrender is being negotiated.

Mladic commanded the Bosnian Serb forces and is wanted for his involvement in the siege of Sarajevo and the 1995 Srebrenica massacre in which around 8,000 men and boys were killed. He along with former Bosnian Serb policital leader Radovan Karadzic are the UN tribunal’s most wanted suspects.

Serbian newspapers speculated today that an arrest was imminent, in time to avert suspension of European Union association talks with Belgrade. An EU report is set be concluded at the end of this month on whether Serbia is cooperating fully with the U.N. tribunal.
