More than 1,000 cases of sandalwood theft registered: Minister

Thiruvananthapuram: Kerala Forest Minister A. Sujanapal told the state Assembly on Tuesday, that 1,933 cases were registered in connection with sandalwood theft from the forest areas in the state. In a written reply, he said the government estimated that sandal wood worth Rs 58,675,920 had been robbed during the period between 2003-2006 and the state’s loss in this regard was Rs 56,507,490.

Sujanapal said the CBI was inquiring into the loss of sandalwood from the forest office strong room at Olavakkod in Palakkad district. The forest officials had registered 1,399 cases in connection with sandalwood smuggling in Marayur division alone, he said adding that 8,252 cases were registered in connection with forest wealth theft.
