NDF refutes charges

Thursday February 23 2006

KOZHIKODE: The Samastha Kerala Jam-Iyyathul Ulema has condemned the publication of Prophet’s cartoons by the NDF daily Thejus.

The Samastha leaders said that they plan to take legal action on the issue.

The signatories to the statement include influential leaders like Samastha president Kalambady Muhammad Musaliyar, general secretary Cherussery Sainudheen Musaliyar, Panakkad Syed Umer Ali Shihab Thangal, K T Manu Musaliyar, Kerala Haj Committee chairman K. Alikutty Musaliyar and Kottumala T M Bappu Musaliyar.

The NDF leadership, however, has dismissed the allegation as an attempt from certain quarters who are anxious over the strong emergence of the daily. NDF chairman A. Sayeed has urged the people not to get misled by the campaign. “The partial success of the agitation for reservation and the strong presence of the daily have created apprehension among the usual critics of our organisation,” he said.

People have understood as to why the NDF has welcomed the reservation package of the UDF Government. A section of the media had tried to create an impression that there has been division in the NDF leadership and cadres. That attempt failed even though media gave wide publicity to the so-called ‘Save NDF Forum’.

“These people have come up with a serious allegation. Some vested interests are trying to misinterpret the cartoon in Thejas daily which actually criticises the Denmark prime minister. They are also trying to mislead the leaders of the community,” Sayeed said in a press release.
