5 sentenced to life for murder of senior citizen

Mumbai, Feb. 25 (PTI): A sessions court on Friday sentenced life imprisonment to five persons, including two women, for the murder of a senior citizen to grab his property worth Rs 35 crores.

The court also sentenced a doctor to a three-year jail term on the charge of certifying the cause of victim’s death as natural.

The accused were sentenced on various counts for jail terms ranging from two years to life. All the sentences would run concurrently.

Prosecutor Ujjwal Nikam sought death penalty for the accused but the court did not (not) consider saying the accused had committed offence for the first time.

Geeta Soni, her husband Irshat Mulla, mother Sharda Soni, Rakesh Valmiki and Ajay Valmiki were sentenced to life imprisonment on the charge of murdering 72-year-old Adi Kurshedji, a Parsi by religion, on May 20, 2003.

Geeta, Irshat and Sharda were also awarded seven years imprisonment on the charge of kidnapping Kurshedji and asked to pay Rs 2000 fine each.

Geeta, Irshat and Sharda and noted surgeon, Dr Babulal Hegde, were also sentenced to three years jail and fined Rs 2,000 on the charge of screening offenders and conspiracy.

Geeta and Sharda were further sentenced to two year jail term on the charge of preparing false documents to hide the cause of death.

The accused had conspired to kill Kurshedji and abducted him on May 20, 2003. He was confined to Geeta’s home and suffocated to death with a pillow on the same day
