50 held, illegal firearms seized in UP

Muzaffarnagar, Feb, 24 (PTI): More than 50 people were arrested and illegal firearms seized today during a shutdown here called to protest the announcement of a bounty on the head of the Danish cartoonist who lampooned Prophet Muhammad.

Senior Superintendent of Police A K Sanger, told reporters that members of two communities indulged in brickbatting and fired at each other for the second consecutive day and 50 of them were arrested for breach of peace.

The illegal firearms seized include a rifle and a pistol, he said.

As a precautionary measure, the district authorities had banned transmission of news channels through cable networks in the town, he said.

Markets also remained closed and the situation in the town remained tense for the second day.

Security has been beefed up with PAC personnel patrolling sensitive areas.

Six persons were injured in a communal clash during a shutdown yesterday. The trouble sparked off after members of one community tried to forcibly down shutters of shops of the other group.

The ‘bandh’ was called by some Hindu organisations to protest against UP Haj Minister Yakoob Qureshi’s announcement of Rs 51 crores for beheading the Danish cartoonist.
