Tension prevailed in this north Kerala district as 32 party offices of Indian Union Muslim League (IUML) were allegedly ransacked by CPI(M) activists today in an apparent retaliation of the attack on the office of party organ ‘Desabhimani” last evening.
A total hartal was observed in the district in reponse to a call by the CPI(M). Shops and business establishments remained closed and vehicles were off the roads in the district.
The IUML offices at Payyannur, Edakkad, Koothuparamba, Mattanur and Thaliparamba and other parts of the district came under attack today.
CPI(M) leader and General Manager of the Desabhimani E P Jayarajan alleged that IUML activists attacked the newspaper office while returning after attending a party district meet and it was with the full knowledge of the IUML leadership.
Meanwhile, IUML District President V K Abdul Khadar Moulavi while condemning the attack on ”Desabhimni” said that the IUML had nothing to do with it. As many as 32 offices of his party came under attack today, he added. Police said tension continued to prevail in some pockets.
The District Collector convened a peace meeting with all political parties to ease the tension.
