LONDON, PTI: London-based advocacy group council of Indian Muslims welcomed the Indian court’s decision in the best bakery case as a "historical verdict."
Describing the judgment "the beginning of a new era", CIM’s chairman Munaf Zeena said, "being the first ever law court judgment of its kind in post independent India, this will serve as a deterrence to all criminal minded elements in all the communities.
"Not only will it restore the shaken confidence of the minorities, specially the Muslims, it will also re-establish the credibility of Indian judicial system in the world and will project the country at the world scene as the upholder of law and human values."
Zeena said, "We congratulate the judges for this historical verdict and salute the courage and commitment of human rights activists, especially social worker Teesta Setalwad and National Human Rights Commission because it were their tireless efforts that made these successful convictions possible…"
Nine of the 17 accused in the case were sentenced to life by a Mumbai court on Friday
