Police open fire in air to quell communal violence in walled city

Ahmedabad | February 26, 2006 8:38:44 PM IST

Police opened fire in the air and lobbed tear gas shells to quell a communal clash between the two groups in the strife-prone Parikshitlalnagar locality of the walled city area during the Mahashivratri celebrations today.

The groups were indulging in stone pelting when the police interevened, said B L Wagh, Police Inspector of Dani Limda.

Police had to fire two rounds in the air and use tear gas shells to disperse the crowd. No one was injured in the incident and only a few window panes broke, he said.

”The incident was a fallout of heckling and exchange of verbal volleys between the two groups. As there was a police picket close-by, and also heavy police bandobast in place because of the Mahashivratri celebrations, it did not take much time to bring the situation under control,” he told UNI.

No arrests have yet been made, he added
