Pondicherry, Feb. 27 (PTI): Pondicherry assembly today unanimously adopted a resolution urging the Centre to accord a 13 per cent reservation for Muslim and Christian candidates in the Union Territory.
The resolution, moved by Chief Minister N Rangasamy, stated that as per the census of 2001, the Muslim and Christian communities formed 13.22 per cent of the total population here and were found to be backward in getting educational and employment opportunities.
The resolution urged the Centre to make arrangements for such a reservation.
Earlier, participating in the discussion that followed after the tabling of the motion, the members said the Centre should be persuaded in the matter.
There was also a suggestion by some members that the assembly could have gone in for a bill instead of adopting a resolution.
