BERHAMPUR, Feb. 26. — The lust for male progenies can turn a grandmother into murderer of her own granddaughter, as happened at the Padadigi village under Jarada police station in Ganjam district yesterday afternoon.
The 60-year-old Saraswati Panigrahy was arrested by police and produced in court. As per the complaints made by Saraswati’s daughter-in-law, Sudeshna Panigrahy (25), her mother-in-law had started torturing her after she gave birth to a girl last year. Even her husband knew about and it had led to marital tussle.
According to Sudeshna, she had preferred to leave her in-laws’ house and started to reside at her parents’ home in Tandipur village as she suspected that Saraswati was trying to kill her child. After mediation of village elders, she had again come back to stay with her in-laws on 24 February.
According to her, Saraswati never wanted the young girl to live. And she had prepared a plan to kill the child. On 25 February, Saraswati asked Sudeshna to fetch few buckets of water from the well in the backyard of their home. Sudeshna left her child with her mother-in-law and went to fetch water. When Sudeshna came back she was shocked to see that Saraswati was throttling her daughter. Although Saraswati tried to escape from the spot, the neighbours who came in hearing the shouts of Sudeshna nabbed Saraswati.
