Murder: police claim breakthrough

KOLLAM: In a significant breakthrough in the investigations into the murder of a 24-year-old woman, Rejani, and her 17-day-old twins at Anchal Yeram on February 10, the Kollam police on Tuesday claimed to have identified the killer as Rajesh, an Indian Army soldier posted in Punjab. Rajesh hails from Sreekandapuram in Kannur. A police team has left for Kannur.

The police had earlier suspected the murder to have been committed by a professional killer hired by another soldier, Dhivil Kumar, who allegedly had an extra-marital relationship with Renjini.

The police said Dhivil Kumar had deserted Renjini when she became pregnant, and had left to join duty in Punjab. Renjini had lodged a complaint against Dhivil Kumar with the State Women’s Commission.

The police said that Rajesh and Dhivil Kumar were close friends. Rajesh might have committed the murder to help his friend wriggle out of an embarrassing situation, they said. The police said Rajesh used to frequently visit Renjini at her house in Anchal. The police said that Renjini’s neighbours had seen Rajesh leaving the house on the day of the murder.
