Thousands of Tamil Nadu Muslim Munnetra Kazhagam (TMMK) volunteers, including a large number of women, courted arrest today when they resorted to ‘jail bharo’ agitation all over Tamil Nadu demanding the immediate release of over 250 Muslims lodged in different prisons in the state in connection with the Coimbatore serial blast and other cases.
TMMK State President M H Jawahirullah said the agitations were held in Chennai, Madurai, Vellore, Cuddalore, Salem, Tiruchirapalli, Palayamkottai, Coimbatore and Nagapattinam .
In Cuddalore, members of the Pondicherry unit of the TMMK also participated, he added.
He claimed many innocent Muslims had spent eight years in jail pending trial. Even if they had been convicted in time, they could have completed their term in prison by now.
He alleged 167 persons arrested in the Coimbatore Serial Blast case were being tortured without any valid reason inside the prison. In Tamil Nadu alone, over 250 persons were kept in the prisons as undertrials.
In Chennai city, before courting arrest, the TMMK activists resorted to novel demonstration by handcuffing themselves and putting up a mock witness box in the busy Parrys area of the city.
