PATNA: Two students were killed and three others injured when the police opened fire to quell a violent crowd of students and parents at Gaya on Wednesday. They were protesting against strict invigilation and arrest of students for unfair practices in the intermediate examinations at the Jagjivan Ram College in the town.
The crowd was demanding the release of about 200 students, who had been sent to jail over the past few days, and those taken into custody on Wednesday.
The police failed to keep the protesters out of the college premises. To counter brick bating, they resorted to a lathicharge, used teargas and finally opened fire.
