SULTHAN BATHERY: The Judicial First Class Magistrate Court II here has acquitted seven leaders of Adivasi Gothra Mahasabha (AGMS) including M Geethanandan and C K Janu in a poaching case due to lack of evidence.

The case was charged on February 24, 2003 under the Wildlife Protection Act by the assistant wildlife warden of Wayanad Wildlife Sanctuary for hunting a spotted deer.

As per the case, Forest officials had seized 5 kg of meat from the hut of one of the accused. The case was charged five days after the police action that ended the land grabbing agitation by tribals at the Muthanga range of the Wayanad Wildlife Sanctuary on February 19, 2003.

According to T M Rasheed, counsel of AGMS, the verdict was delivered in one of the six cases charged against Adivasis and leaders of AGMS in connection with the Muthanga agitation.
