Court orders closing of 4 more trenches at disputed site

The Lucknow Bench of the Allahabad High Court has directed Archaeological Survey of India to close four more trenches at the disputed site at Ayodhya.

The order was passed by a Special Full Bench comprising Justice S.R.Alam, Justice Bhanwar Singh and Justice O P Srivastava, yesterday, on an application moved by the ASI.

Directing the ASI to take neccessary steps to buttress the trenches with sand bags within six weeks, the court ordered that it follow the guidelines issued on February 24, 2004 in this regard.

The court posted the next hearing in the Ramjanam Bhoomi-Babri Masjid title suits to March 27, ASI counsel Ravi P Mehrotra told PTI.

The court had, a few years ago, ordered the excavation of 90 trenches at the disputed site, while 33 of them had been filled up earlier for reasons of maintenance, he added.
