RAJKOT/AHMEDABAD: In a bid to save the sex-ratio from plummeting further, the state government launched a public awareness campaign — ‘Beti Bachao Andolan’ on Sunday.
In a gathering of about 2,000 women from low sexratio districts like Mehsana, Visnagar, Vijapur and Unjha, Chief Minister Narendra Modi called upon doctors to lead the movement and save wombs from turning into graveyards. The sex-ratio (0 to 6 years) for Guajrat was 883 girls per 1000 boys in the 2001 census, as compared to a national average of 927 girls per 1000 boys. The figure for the state dripped to 848 in 2003 and to 824 in 2004. According to census figures, districts having higher literacy rate show an adverse sex-ratio. Ahmedabad, Mehsana, Gandhinagar and Rajkot, with female literacy rate above 60 per cent, have less than 850 girls per 1000 boys.
But Dangs, Dahod and Narmada, with hardly 35 to 40 per cent female literacy, boast of a 950 girls per 1000 boys.
