Panchayats have weakened in BJP-ruled States: Maruti Manpade
BELLARY: Maruti Manpade, President of the Karnataka State Gram Panchayat Workers’ Association, on Monday accused the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) of blocking the process of decentralisation and feared that it will undo what has been done under the panchayat raj system.
Speaking to presspersons here, Mr. Manpade said the BJP has indicated that it does not believe in decentralisation with its Minister C.M. Udasi announcing that the "Belur Declaration" will not be implemented.
"When the panchayat system has come to stay and has been functioning effectively in several States, including Kerala and West Bengal, the BJP instead of strengthening the system is keen on weakening it.
"It is a dangerous move and the panchayats will cease to exist if this is allowed to happen," he said and added there are instances of how the panchayats have been weakened in BJP-ruled States.
Mr. Manpade said a struggle will be launched to prevent the BJP from going ahead with its agenda in the matter.
