Woman molested inside Delhi Secretariat, govt orders probe

New Delhi, Mar 07: A young woman was allegedly molested near the Chief Minister Sheila Dikshit’s office in the high-security Delhi Secretariat, triggering demands for her resignation and prompting the government to order a probe.

The woman, who had come to the secretariat yesterday in search of a job, was molested allegedly by one Ranbeer Singh Negi, a supervisor working with the private agency looking after sanitation arrangements in the building.

The incident allegedly took place on the third floor of the secretariat, which houses the Chief Minister’s office.

The accused has been arrested and removed from the job and an FIR has been registered against him under IPC sections 354 and 509, both deal with molestation, at the IP estate police station, Dikshit told the assembly.

Making a statement on the issue, she informed the house that a high-level probe headed by Additional Secretary (Home) Rajeev Kale has been ordered into the matter. "Action is being taken by both the administration and the police," she added.

Earlier, pandemonium erupted in the assembly after opposition BJP members trooped to the well of the house and shouted slogans demanding a discussion on the issue and demanded the resignation of Dikshit. Opposition members alleged that the government was pressuring the police to "go slow" on the issue. Speaker Prem Singh rejected their plea for a discussion even as opposition members persisted with their demand leading to their expulsion from the house.
