Pondicherry, Mar 10: The Principal Sessions Court here today dismissed the bail petitions of three accused in the Sankararaman murder case.
The petitions, filed by Anil Kumar, K S Kumar and Anandakumar, had stated that they should be granted bail since the main accused in the case, Kanchi Sankaracharya Jayendra Saraswathi and his junior Vijayendra Saraswathi, had been released on bail.
In his order, Judge M Chinnapandi said though the petitioners had not committed the murder out of personal vengeance, they had committed it for money.
If they are granted bail, they would tamper with evidence by threatening the witnesses, thereby escaping from the clutches of law, the court said.
Further keeping in view the ‘position’ of the petitions, the status of the victim, the nature of evidence and seriousness of the offence, the petitioners’ release on bail at this stage would have an impact on material collected by the prosecution, the court held.
Defence counsel for another accused ‘Maattu’ Baskar did not press the bail plea.
