The Congress Working Committee (CWC) on Saturday night expressed concern over BJP leader L K Advani’s decision to launch an yatra to protest against the Varanasi blasts, describing it as a “crude attempt” to communalise the latest terrorist attack.

After a two-and-half-hour CWC meeting here on Saturday night, the first since party chief Sonia Gandhi reconstituted the apex executive body several weeks ago, the party urged all progressive forces to take on both “terrorism and communalism” and not allow these forces to succeed in their diversionary tactics.

Party General Secretary Janardhan Dwivedi, briefing newsmen on the CWC deliberations, wondered how the BJP could make an issue out of the Varanasi incident to take on the UPA government when there were many such incidents during the NDA rule — like the Parliament and Akshardham attacks
