A police crackdown Wednesday on students, writers and intellectuals of the Telangana region during their celebration of Holi in the Osmania University campus here led to tension in the area.
Human Rights Forum convenor Kodanda Ram and journalist P. Yadgiri were among the many arrested by police when they were celebrating Holi in front of the arts college building.
Saying that they had not sought permission for the celebrations, police arrested several people including students, professors, rights activists and journalists when they were playing with colours in the traditional Telangana style. Police allegedly misbehaved with journalists who rushed to the scene. "The police action was unnecessary as we were celebrating the festival in a peaceful manner," said a student.
Condemning the police action, students’ bodies have called a shutdown in the university Thursday. As tension mounted, Rapid Action Force (RAF) personnel were deployed in the campus. The Telangana Rashtra Samiti (TRS), which is campaigning for the creation of a separate state comprising the Telangana region, condemned the police action.
"Police acted against them just because they are supporters of a separate Telangana. We strongly condemn the arrests and demand stern action against the officials responsible for it," said TRS leader and legislator N. Narsimha Reddy.
