Abdullah demands complete autonomy for Jammu and Kashmir

SRINAGAR, MAR 19 (PTI)

National Conference President Omar Abdullah today said his party wanted complete autonomy for Jammu and Kashmir and demanded that the people of the state be given an opportunity to elect and run the government of their choice.

Barring three issues (Defence, Currency and Foreign Affairs) people of Jammu and Kashmir should be provided an opportunity to elect and run the government of their choice in the state means autonomy, Omar said addressing party workers at NC headquarters here today.

He said the party’s long standing demand for autonomy was appreciated even in Pakistan. During my meeting with Pakistan President Pervez Musharraf during the just held Pugwash Conference in Islamabad it explained the covenants of greater autonomy for the state to Musharraf prompting him to remark that there was not big difference between autonomy and self rule formula putforth by him, Omar said.

The NC Chief said he however stressed that any possible solution to the Kashmir issue should be acceptable to the people of Jammu and Kashmir across the Line of Control.

He said gun was no solution to the issue and after so much of bloodshed a solution to the issue should be found after leaving the gun.

The NC chief said he will take up with the centre the case of several Kashmiris who had gone to Pakistan-occupied-Kashmir but wanted to return to their homes. "I will take up with the Prime Minister the case of Kashmiris in PoK," he said.
