DH News Service Gulbarga:
The members of the All-India Safai Mazdoor Congress local unit on Monday urged Supreme Court former judge and National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) member Shivraj Patil to prevail upon the Union Government to form the National Commission for Safai Karmacharis (scavengers).
A delegation led by All-India Safai Mazdoor Congress local unit President Bhaskar Babu on Monday met Justice Patil, who has come to Gulbarga to participate in the Rathotsava (car festival) on the occasion of the 184th Punyathithi of Lord Sharanabasaveshwara. Submitting a memorandum of their demands to Justice Patil, Mr Babu stated that the safai karmacharis were backward socially, economically, and educationally. “Other than the scavenging work, we know nothing,” he added.
Stating that there was a need to establish the National Commission for Safai Karmacharis, he said, only the establishment of such a commission could help in the betterment of the lives of the safai karmacharis.
He said, already some States in the country like Rajastan, Maharashtra, Gujarat, and others had established State-level Commissions for Safai Karmacharis. Even though many a representations had been given to the State Government here, still no measures had been initiated towards this, he added.
Thereby, he urged the NHRC to prevail upon the Union Government to form the National Commission for Safai Karmacharis.
It may be mentioned here that Bihar former governor Buta Singh is the national president of All-India Safai Mazdoor Congress.
