Charges framed against Kanchi seer in murder case
PONDICHERRY, MAR 28 (PTI) Charges were framed against Kanchi Sankaracharya Jayendra Saraswathi, his junior Vijayendra Saraswathi and 22 other accused in the Sankararaman murder case by a court here today.
When Principal Sessions Judge M Chinnapandi framed the charges under various sections of IPC, the seers and the other accused pleaded not guilty.
The charges framed included murder, criminal conspiracy, giving false information to screen offenders and criminal trespass. Both Jayendra Saraswathi and Vijayendra Saraswathi told the court that the charges were false and concocted by the police. The judge posted further proceedings in the case to April 17.
When the proceedings began, a petition was filed on behalf of Jayendra Saraswathi seeking to defer the framing of charges on the ground that the Supreme Court was hearing an SLP for change of special public prosecutor appointed by the Tamil Nadu government for the case. The judge, however, said that was a different matter and he would abide by any order given by the apex court.
The Supreme Court yesterday issued notice to the Tamil Nadu government on the seer’s petition and said it would take up the hearing in early April. With the framing of charges, the stage has been set for the commencement of the trial in the case relating to the murder of Kancheepuram temple official Sankararaman in September 2004. Tight security arrangements had been made in and around the court premises.
