Students to the rescue of the Chaliyar

The two-month-long `Chaliyar Fete ’06,’ organised by Hidaya Public School, Kozhikode, began at Green Garden, Palazhi, Kozhikode, on March 29. The programme is aimed at restoring the Chaliyar river to its pristine glory.

Sinan and Srilakshmi, students, inaugurated the programme, organised by the `School Parliament.’ The school’s `Prime Ministers,’ Rashida and Tasmeen, moved resolutions expressing solidarity with environmentalist Medha Patkar, who is staging a fast against the Narmada dam. Gulshad Muhammad, senior scientist, CMFRI, launched the children’s mineral soap.

Education Minister E.T. Mohammed Basheer released the children’s river encyclopaedia at Green Valley at Pantheerankau on March 30. The Chaliyar Environment Award was presented to architect R.K. Ramesh. Minister for Forests A. Sujanapal inaugurated the mangrove afforestration project and the photo exhibition on mangroves.

The students began a visit to the Coca-Cola factory at Plachimada in Palakkad district and the Pepsi factory at Puthusserry from April 1 as part of the celebrations.
