Dubai: An Indian expatriate was sentenced to 10 years in prison and fined Dh800 (Rs 9735) for murdering a compatriot in a drunken brawl.
A Court in the emirate of Fujairah in the UAE awarded 10 years of jail time to 35-year-old Balan B for assaulting Shashi V, 41, resulting in his death. Balan, who sustained some injuries in his right hand, reportedly admitted to the crime saying that he fought with the victim for refusing to pay for a bottle of alcohol he bought earlier.
The duo, both in an inebriated state, argued about the price of the liquor, which led to a fight. Shashi tried to hit Balan with a piece of wood, who managed to snatch it from the victim and hit him on his forehead. When falling down, the victim hit his head on some bricks scattered on the floor and as a result died on the spot. The prosecution charged Balan with premeditated murder, consumption of alcohol and working with an employer other than his sponsor.
When the case was referred to the Fujairah court it sentenced Balan to 15 years in prison for premeditated murder, and fined him Dh500 (Rs 6084.40) for drinking alcohol and Dh300 (Rs 3650.70) for working with an employer other than his sponsor. The court however, sustained the defendant’s petition later and reduced the jail term from 15 to 10 years.
