BHOPAL: The police fired six rounds in the air and used tear-gas to disperse a mob that went berserk and set a truck on fire after it had crushed to death a girl on the busy Bhopal by-pass road on Thursday morning.
The villagers went on the rampage after young Suchita Chauhan was crushed by a speeding truck near Khajuri Kalan on the outskirts of the State Capital. A large number of people had gathered for the Navratri festivities at Khajuri Kalan village.
A huge mob collected immediately after the accident. It set ablaze the truck (HR 38 E 9335), registered at Gurgaon, and did not allow the fire brigade to reach the spot. Neither the furious crowd permitted the police to take away the girl’s body.
As the police intervened, the mob started hurling stones. This left one civilian and over a dozen policemen injured, including the Piplani City Superintendent of Police, and the Bilkhiria Station Officer. One cop was seriously hurt in the eye.
The driver of the truck has been arrested. Inquiries revealed that the villagers were angry as two persons had died in another accident near the same spot two days ago. They had demanded a speed-breaker and their protest turned violent after Thursday’s accident.
