Indefinite curfew was imposed Tuesday on a part of Pali town in Rajasthan following a scuffle between two communities over the route of a Mahavir Jayanti procession in which 10 people were injured.
The curfew was clamped on the Kotwali police station area at Pali, 250 km from here, when people belonging to the minority community objected to the procession passing through the Rooi-Ka-Bas area of the walled city, a police official told IANS by phone.
Police escorting the procession tried to defuse the tension but suddenly people from both the sides started throwing stones at each other, forcing the district administration to impose curfew on the part of the walled city area, he added.
The incident occurred at 10 a.m.
The situation is tense but under control, said the official. Security has been beefed up in Pali and extra police force, including a battalion of special task force (STF), deployed in the Kotwali area.
