Farmers' suicides due to depression: Govt - News India
Tuesday, April 11, 2006 (Mumbai):

Government officials in Maharashtra’s Beed district have said that the suicide by eight farmers was due to depression.

Earlier, NDTV had reported that the suicides were related to debt accumulated by farmers due to repeated crop losses over the years.

Union Agriculture Minister Sharad Pawar had announced a special package for distressed farmers focusing on infrastructure, insurance and marketing facilities.

"The draft plan will be placed before the Prime Minster and other ministers concerned before the cabinet approval within 45 days," Pawar told reporters after meeting representatives of four states.

The meeting was attended by chief ministers of Andhra Pradesh and Maharashtra YS Rajsekhar Reddy and Vilasrao Deshmukh. Karnataka was represented by agriculture minister Bandeppa Khashampur and officials of Kerala government were also present.

The rehabilitation package will be implemented in 30 districts across four states. (With PTI inputs)
