MATTANNUR: Tension broke out here on Wednesday following the death of a motorcyclist in a road accident.
The deceased has been identified as Hijas, 19, son of Muhammad of Kolari, near here. The police said that Hijas and his friend Pawas were riding on a motorbike at around 3 p.m. When they saw a police jeep coming from the opposite direction, they turned back and sped away. The motorcycle then collided with a mini-lorry at Kashimukku, around 5 km from here. Hijas suffered fatal injuries in the accident. Pawas, who was seriously injured, has been admitted to a hospital in Kannur.
Following the incident, a mob gathered near the police station here, alleging that the accident was caused when the police chased the two-wheeler. The protestors damaged two Kerala State Road Transport Corporation buses.
According to the Mattannur police, a police team was going to the area in connection with a different case when they saw the youth riding an unregistered new motorcycle speeding away on seeing their jeep. The police denied that it chased the motorcycle.
