Behrampore, Apr 12 (UNI) One person was killed when police opened fire today to disperse two groups which had clashed during a religious procession in Simulia in Murshidabad district, sources said.
The clash broke out when a particular group pelted stones at another group who were carrying out a procession to mark a festival called ‘Charak’.Police personnel from Salar police station rushed to the spot but the irate villagers attacked the policemen as well, resulting in the police opening fire.
A 25 year old woman died in the police firing while two others, including a policeman, who were injured in the clash have been admitted to a local hospital.Meanwhile, Sub-Inspector of Salar police station Shibaprasad Mukhopadhyay was suspended for resorting to firing. Police said, ”It’s yet to be ascertained whether the police firing was provoked. Investigations are on.”
