Guwahati, April 13: The Assam health department today confirmed that at least 19 people have died of malaria over the past few days in different parts of the state.
“So far, we have received reports of 35 deaths caused by malaria. However, so far we have been able to confirm 19 deaths,” disclosed state director of health services D. Hojai.
He said health officials have rushed to remote areas to ascertain the exact number of deaths as well as list the total number of affected persons.
Hojai said Lakhimpur, Golaghat, Sonitpur and Goalpara are the districts worst affected by the malaria outbreak. He, however, emphasised that steps were being taken to control the situation.
“We have rushed medicines to the affected areas. DDT is also being sprayed. Orders have been placed for 2.5 lakh rapid diagnostic kits. A control room has been set up at the directorate of health services to enable us to monitor the situation round-the-clock,” he added.
The Assam Human Rights Commission has sought a detailed report from the director of health services within two months, providing the exact number of deaths in various districts and listing the measures taken.
