KOCHI: Chief Information Commissioner, Kerala Palat Mohandas, emphasised the need for creating awareness among the public on the Right to Information Act which was passed in both Houses of parliament.
Speaking after releasing a hand book on right to Information Act published by Human Rights Defence Forum, here, Mohandas expressed the hope that the book would benefit people who are not aware of this Act.
All citizens possess the right to information, he said adding an applicant could obtain information within 30 days from the date of request.
He said as far as the Commission was concerned it has an open mind and would welcome any constructive suggestions for the effective implementation of the Act.
The Commission was getting several requests from the people for information and over 86 per cent of them were connected with administrative matters.
Kalady Sree Sankaracharya Univiersity of Sanskrit Vice Chancellor K S Radhakrishnan, who received the first copy of the book, said the Act would be beneficial to the people, especially the media. Those who spoke included Raj Mohan, Ernakulam Press Club Secretary.
