AN INDIAN driver (31) and an Ethiopian housemaid (28) have agreed to marry after they were acquitted of charges of illicit relations on Thursday.
The duo, both Muslims, were acquitted on the ground of “inadequacy of legal procedures” despite their confession to the police, said the maid’s lawyer Saida Gash.
The only witness in the case, a Sri Lankan driver working for the maid’s host family, had testified that he never saw them in a compromising position.
THE Ethiopian maid was bailed out by the Indian’s sponsor last month after six months in custody. The latter said he wants to be the sponsor of the woman as well.
The Indian had proposed marriage to the Ethiopian on March 23 in front of the judge.
Legal sources said the maid cannot complain about the detention after the acquittal, as such a step is usually taken to protect her.
