KENDRAPARA: Several activists of the area on Monday sent missives to the Chief Minister, Chairpersons of State Women’s Commission and State Human Rights Commission drawing their attention to a sexual harassment case in Rathia village, near here.
A Dalit woman, 36, was beaten up and paraded naked through the village by four inebriated persons on Saturday for protesting a rape bid on her. They also severely assaulted her husband when he protested, the victim stated in her FIR lodged at Dharmasala police station. Some villagers who tried to save her were also thrashed.
The miscreants even ransacked the couple’s house and threatened them with dire consequences if they did not withdraw the case, sources said. The Dharmasala police said several places had been raided to nab the culprits.
The couple, meanwhile, urged the district SP to take action as the local police were allegedly hand-in-glove with the culprits.
Naliniprava Tarei, secretary of District Democratic Women’s Association, and other women leaders on Monday visited Rathia and met the victim and her husband.
