MUMBAI: The 14-year-old girl, who had allegedly been raped by over 120 men at Chembur and Pant Nagar in Mumbai and Allahabad in Uttar Pradesh, has told the police that her mother forced her to have sex with different people three years ago, said zonal deputy police commissioner Ravindra Sengaonkar.
The police said her mother, a prostitute, died last year. Sengaonkar said that the girl has been sent for a medical examination at the Nagpada Police Hospital.
The medical examination of a rape victim is conducted soon after the complaint is registered. But in this case, the complaint was registered with the RCF police on Sunday and the victim was sent for medical examination after 48 hours.
“The victim said her mother had forced her to have sex with a man for the first time in Allahabad three years ago. She further told the police that her father, a tailor, was in Mumbai and therefore she couldn’t muster the courage to complain for fear of being beaten up by the accused. But after her mother’s death, the girl came to Mumbai with her father and narrated her story to him. We have arrested the 17 people she identified,’’ said Sengaonkar.
In her complaint, the victim initially told the police that she was raped by 41 men. Then she changed it to 90 men and on Tuesday, the number went up to 120.
The police have still not arrested her grandfather, maternal uncle, uncle and cousins, who have also been named in the FIR.
“It’s a serious offence and we are taking precautions to ensure a fair probe,’’ Sengaonkar said.
A case of rape is likely to be registered with the Pant Nagar police station on Wednesday by the victim.
