IMPHAL, May 11: In a major strike against insurgents, troops of Assam rifles shot dead the chief of the army staff along with deputy home secretary of the People United Liberation Front, PULF in the wee hours today at Molnom Kuki village some 8 km east of Yairipok police station in Thoubal district, a police source said today.
The deceased PULF commander who was also the finance chief of the outfit was identified as Basir Lashkar alias Muthi alias Moti, 32, son of Mg Nijamuddin of Yairpok Poudel Mamamng Leikai. And his accomplice was identified as Md Shfi alias Rami son of Md Karimuddin of Keirao Makting, Manjor Ingkhol. He was stated to be the finance secretary of the outfit besides looking after the charge of deputy home secretary.
PRO, PIB, defense wing quoting the statement of the Assam Rifles authorities said the two important leaders of PULF were killed in retaliatory firing by troops of Assam Rifles. The statement stated that the two militants coming in a scooter when ambushed by the AR started firing at the troops and were killed in the exchange. The incident occured at Kakmayai under Yairipok police station in the wee hour today.
“On search of the incident site, one 9mm Chinese made pistol, one 9 mm Indian pistol, 12 live round and 3 fired cases of 9mm, one Chinese head gear, two mobile phones, calculator, incriminating PULF documents and extortion notes, Rs 6,500 cash and one scooter LML Vespa were recovered” PIB(Defence wing) statement said.
The statement further stated that it has been confirmed by Police sources and locals that Bashir has been involved in terrorizing locals and in a number of extortion cases.
“Based on a document recovered from the person of Bashir Laskar it is apparent that under his leadership extortion has been rampant in Thoubal district in particular and adjoining areas of the state” the statement stated.
The Assam Rifles authorities further claim that Bashir has known for criminal records with police, he was arrested under NSA in year 2001 and under went sentence. Bashir Khan, who besides being Commander-in-Chief was also Finance secretary of the outfit, added the PIB (DW) press release.
According to family source, Bashir Lashkar had left home ten years back to join PULF. He was arrested by the police once in 2001 and lodged at jail under NSA for one year while Shafir had joined the outfit some three years back. He has never been apprehended by security forces since joining the outfit.
The dead bodies of the two were taken to RIMS morgue by Yairipok police after they were handed over to them. After post mortem, the families of the slain PULP leaders received the bodies for their last rites this afternoon.
Mention may be made here that Bashir as a leader and founder member of the outfit PULF was last seen by the local media on its AK Battalion raising day held some where in cachar region, talking about the need for unification of all the revolutionary groups to fight for the sovereignty of the state of Manipur.
In his last press communique to the local media talked about sacrificing his life for the cause of upliftment of Muslim community residing in Manipur.
