Bangalore, May 12 (IANS) Two children died Friday in a mysterious explosion in the house of a retired army personnel here, a top police official said.
City police commissioner Ajay Kumar Singh told reporters that the incident occurred when the victims – Prashant (13) and Susen (4) – were playing in the house of Nathan, an ex-serviceman, at Banaswadi, a suburb in north Bangalore.
'The bomb detection squad, which rushed to the spot for investigations, has not been able to establish the cause of the explosion, in which Nathan's son (Prashant) died instantaneously and Susen, son of Pandian, a serving army man, was severely injured and succumbed at the command hospital later,' Singh said.
Since Nathan was away and his wife had gone out to fetch water when the incident took place, the police in the absence of an eyewitness have not been able to ascertain what had exploded.
'Apart from a hammer near the bed in the room, where the victims were playing, we have not found anything substantial to identify the material that caused the blast. We suspect the two children, who were playing at that time, might have stumbled upon either explosives or a crude bomb, which exploded on being hit with the hammer,' Singh pointed out.
As the police were waiting for Nathan to return for interrogation, no arrests or detentions were made.
Nathan's wife, who rushed to the house on hearing the loud explosion, also could not explain to the police whether explosive materials were stored in the house.
